Theory & Practical TESTS

You can take your Theory Test once your provisional licence becomes valid.

Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday.

You can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, however you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.

If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate, your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.

The PRACTICAL TEST

Well, the time it will take will depend on many factors, particularly your age and ability. An average pupil aged between 17 and 25 can normally expect to be ready for test after around 45 hours of weekly tuition - in conjunction with private practice of around 25 hours. Older than this, things may take a little longer. For example, an average-ability learner aged 50 may require 80-90 hours practice*.

  • The driving test (which costs £62 on weekdays; weekday evenings and weekends costs £75) has been designed to see if you:
    • can drive safely in different road and traffic conditions.
    • know The Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving
  • On test day, after meeting your examiner, the next two stages are:
    • an eyesight check (the distance requirement for this is 20 metres for vehicles displaying the new style number plate, or 20.5 metres for vehicles displaying an old style number plate).
    • your examiner will also ask you two questions about carrying out vehicle safety checks
